Course Design Institute (asynchronous and synchronous options)

The Course Design Institute (CDI) and Asynchronous Course Design Institute (ACDI) are seven-week online courses that guide ATSU faculty and staff through the backward design method of course design. Participants choose a course or learning experience to plan, such as an ATSU course they are currently teaching or will teach in the future, a one-day workshop, a series of lectures, an employee training session, a microcredential, or a clinical education experience. Through hands-on activities, discussions, and assignments, participants will gain the skills and confidence to design student-centered units of instruction.

course quick facts
  • Who can apply: All ATSU employees
  • Cost to participate: Free
  • Course length: 7 weeks
  • ACDI course format: Asynchronous
  • ACDI time commitment: 4-6 hours/week
  • ACDI offered annually: January-March
  • CDI course format: 90-minute weekly Zoom meetings
  • CDI time commitment: 4-6 hours/week outside of class
  • CDI offered annually: July-September
Course details

CDI is held each year from July to September, and it includes weekly required 90-minute synchronous Zoom class meetings. ACDI is offered from January to March each year, and there are no required weekly class meetings. Comparable content is offered in each version of the course. Participants of CDI and ACDI should expect to spend about four to six hours weekly (outside of class sessions, if applicable) completing course deliverables and activities.

During CDI and ACDI, participants will:

  • Explore and apply evidence-based practices of course design, including contemporary teaching approaches for in-person, synchronous online, and asynchronous modalities.
  • Enhance a new or existing course or learning experience with measurable learning objectives, active learning strategies, and scaffolded instruction.
  • Develop the skills necessary to create well-designed and pedagogically sound courses or learning experiences.

Completion requirements for CDI and ACDI are submitting a Course Design Blueprint (final course deliverable) and earning at least a 70% average on all course assignments. Additionally, CDI participants must attend at least six of the seven synchronous Zoom class meetings.

In the following video (3:37 min.), we explore the course’s goals and scope and highlight the two modalities available for participants interested in this course.

Course benefits

With support and guidance from TLC team members, participants have structured time to focus on designing a course or learning experience. The backward design method is taught in an iterative way, allowing participants to work through course design step-by-step in manageable chunks.

Participants also benefit from engaging in valuable collegial conversations and networking opportunities with a variety of ATSU faculty and staff, many of whom they would not have connected with otherwise. Participants who fulfill the course completion requirements earn a Certificate of Completion and are recognized in Paylocity. In addition, CDI and ACDI fulfill the course requirement for Level 1 (Pedagogy) of the Level Up! Certificate Program.

Who should apply

The TLC welcomes applications from all ATSU faculty and staff. CDI and ACDI are taught at an introductory level, so no prior course design experience is required. However, by Week 1, participants will need to identify a course or learning experience that they will plan. Therefore, it is best if prospective participants have ideas in mind when applying for CDI or ACDI. Anyone with questions about selecting an appropriate course or learning experience to plan should email the TLC at tlc@atsu.edu.

Participants in all TLC courses are expected to have basic computer skills, including the ability to log into the ATSU Portal, access Canvas and ATSU email, and navigate webpages effectively. During a course, participants must also have regular access to a computer or tablet and the internet. For CDI’s scheduled synchronous meetings, participants must be able to use Zoom. It is recommended that participants have access to a webcam and a microphone for both synchronous and asynchronous courses. If needed, loaner equipment may be available free of charge through the ATSU Service Desk.

Course application

A call for applications will be made in the TLC’s monthly newsletter, typically between one to two months prior to the course start date. Applications are submitted through an online form and reviewed on a rolling basis through the deadline stated in the newsletter. Please contact the TLC at tlc@atsu.edu with any questions about the course or the application process.

Test-out option

ATSU faculty and staff who already have the knowledge and skills to meet this course’s requirements may be interested in the test-out option, which is available at any time during the year. Please contact the TLC at tlc@atsu.edu to learn more.
