Advancing Skills in Osteopathy (ASO) courses

The Advancing Skills in Osteopathy (ASO) course is a novel continuing education program that provides participants the most advanced series of training courses in palpation world-wide. The goal of the ASO program is to provide objective feedback using state-of-the-art instrumentation to assist motivated and skilled clinicians in osteopathic principles and practices. This course will refine and standardize clinicians’ skills and provide a personal, motivational experience of osteopathic history.

The ASO program features extensive hands-on training dedicated to providing objective feedback on the accuracy of each participant’s palpatory skills. The ASO team, which includes leading educators and experienced research assistants and coordinators, oversees the hands-on training. Participants will develop strategies to improve performance and interpretation of techniques through mentorship with faculty, peer critique and self-directed learning with calibrated models. These courses range from 15 to 30 hours and will accommodate from 6 to 10 attendees.

The history of osteopathic medicine

A unique feature to this training program is its historical component. Led by staff from ATSU’s Museum of Osteopathic Medicine (SM), this feature gives participants an intimate experience of the history of osteopathic medicine upon the grounds of the American School of Osteopathy, where Andrew Taylor Still began a revolution in medicine that continues today. By incorporating living history with modern advanced technologies, the ASO program is an unprecedented and irreproducible program.

Level I

The ATSRI Level I Advancing Skills in Osteopathy course includes a 20-hour lecture and lab series that focuses on the evaluation of the human pelvis. Using 2D imaging technology, a comprehensive measurement system, and objective human-simulated models developed at the ATSRI, participants will gain insights about their localization and diagnostic accuracy through their involvement in hands-on lab experiences. The Level I course aims to provide participants with individualized feedback and an enhanced understanding of the science of palpation, pelvic mechanics, and the evidence for biomedical and osteopathic models.

Level II

The ATSRI Level II Advancing Skills in Osteopathy course includes a 20-hour lecture and lab series that focuses on the evaluation of the lumbar region of the human spine. Using ultrasound, 3D imaging, pressure sensor technology, and objective human-simulated models developed at the ATSRI, participants will gain insights about their localization and diagnostic accuracy regarding the quantification of rotational testing of lumbar segments. The Level II course aims to provide participants with individualized feedback and an enhanced understanding of the foundations of accurate palpation, spinomechanics, and the evidence for biomedical and osteopathic models.
